What is Maklon?
The term “maklon” originates from the Dutch word “maakloon,” which means production cost. In Indonesia, maklon refers to a manufacturing service provided by a company to produce products for another party that owns the brand. In other words, maklon allows brand owners to have products without needing their own factories or production facilities.
Maklon services are widely used in the cosmetics, pharmaceutical, food, and fashion industries. In the process, the maklon company handles production, packaging, and even product regulations such as registration with the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) and halal certification if required.
Types of Maklon
Based on the production model, maklon can be divided into three main types:
- Toll Manufacturing – The maklon company only provides production facilities, while raw materials are supplied by the brand owner.
- Contract Manufacturing – The maklon company provides both production facilities and raw materials.
- One Stop Maklon (Fully Fledged Manufacturing) – The maklon company handles the entire production process, including raw material supply, mass production, legal compliance, and even marketing.
Differences Between OEM and ODM in Maklon
In the cosmetics industry, there are two main models in maklon: OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and ODM (Original Design Manufacturer):
- OEM: The brand owner has their own product formula and specifications, while the maklon company is responsible for manufacturing the product according to these specifications.
- ODM: The maklon company provides pre-developed product formulas and designs, allowing the brand owner to choose and market the product under their own brand.
CPKB (Good Manufacturing Practices for Cosmetics) is a standard set by BPOM to ensure that every cosmetic product produced meets strict quality and safety standards. Choosing a CPKB-certified maklon company is essential to ensure that the products are safe, high-quality, and legally approved for distribution.
