Over 35,000 Problematic Food Products Seized by BPOM Ahead of Lebaran
Ahead of Lebaran 2025, the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM RI) has stepped up its efforts to ensure food safety by intensifying surveillance across the country. Starting from February 24, 2025, BPOM conducted a rigorous inspection focusing on processed food products in distribution channels such as importers, distributors, retailers, and e-commerce warehouses.

In the fourth phase of this intensified monitoring, held from March 13 to 19, 2024, inspectors prioritized checking for products lacking valid distribution permits (TIE), expired items, and damaged goods. Out of 1,190 monitored outlets, 31.6% were found not to meet regulatory standards, while 68.4% were compliant.
BPOM Chief Taruna Ikrar emphasized the need for continuous improvements in compliance to ensure food safety, quality, and nutritional standards.
“Although the majority of venues have complied with the regulations, there remains a significant number that must enhance their adherence to safeguard public health,” he stated.
Key Findings of the Enforcement Operation:
Total Seized Products: 35,534 items
Products without Permits (TIE): 19,795 items (55.7%)
Expired Products: 14,300 items (40.2%)
Damaged Products: 1,439 items (4.2%)
Total Economic Value:Rp16.5 billion
The crackdown revealed that products lacking the necessary permits were predominantly found in five regions:
Jakarta: 9,195 items (46.45%)
Balikpapan: 1,185 items (5.99%)
Tarakan: 2,044 items (10.33%)
Pontianak: 487 items (2.46%)
