The Importance of SNI in Food Exports to Indonesia

Indonesia enforces the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) as the only official national standard for certain products. SNI is required to ensure the quality, safety, and security of food products entering the Indonesian market.

According to the Ministry of Industry, mandatory SNI applies to high-risk products and raw materials to protect consumers, particularly concerning Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental aspects (HSSE).

In practice, any food product listed under mandatory SNI regulations cannot be distributed in Indonesia without an SNI certificate. Importers are responsible for ensuring compliance with SNI to avoid goods being held at ports by Customs or the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM).

For consumers, the SNI mark is a guarantee that the product has passed government quality standards, giving them confidence and assurance in the product.

Examples of Processed Food and Beverage Products That Require SNI Certification

The following are examples of food and beverage products that must be certified under SNI:

  • Packaged Drinking Water (AMDK) – SNI 3553:2015
  • Natural Mineral Water – SNI 6242:2015
  • Dew Drinking Water – SNI 7812:2013
  • Demineralized Water (for industrial use)
  • Iodized Table Salt – SNI 01-3556:2000
  • Refined Crystal Sugar – SNI 01-3140.2:2006
  • Wheat Flour for Food Use – SNI 3751:2009
  • Palm Cooking Oil – SNI 7709:2012
  • Instant Coffee – SNI 2983:2014

⚠️ Note: This list is not exhaustive and may be updated by the government (Ministry of Industry or BSN). Other products such as energy drinks, certain snacks, or canned processed fish may be regulated under separate standards. Exporters are encouraged to regularly check the official websites of BSN or the Ministry of Industry for the latest list of mandatory SNI products.

How to Obtain SNI Certification (SPPT SNI)

To legally enter the Indonesian market, exporters must obtain a Certificate of Product Using the SNI Mark (SPPT SNI). The general process is as follows:

1. Application Submission

Exporters or their local representatives/importers must submit an application to an accredited product certification body (e.g., Sucofindo, TUV NORD). Required documents typically include:

  • SPPT SNI application form
  • ISO 9001 Quality Management System certificate or an equivalent certificate from the country of origin
  • Product technical specifications
  • Production process diagrams
  • Product catalogs and trademark registration proof

2. Verification and Factory Audit

The certification body will verify the submitted documents and conduct an audit of the manufacturer’s facility to assess compliance with SNI. If issues are found, exporters are given the opportunity to correct them before proceeding.

3. Product Testing

Product samples will be tested in a laboratory accredited by the National Accreditation Committee (KAN). Tests include quality and safety assessments based on the applicable SNI. If the results are satisfactory, the certification body will issue the SPPT SNI.

4. Use of SNI Mark and Regulatory Monitoring

Once the SPPT SNI is issued, exporters can display the SNI logo on their product packaging. Additionally, BPOM requires an Import Notification Letter (SKI) for processed food products. If the product falls under the mandatory SNI category, the SPPT SNI must be included in the SKI application.

Why SNI Compliance Matters

Complying with SNI ensures not only smooth customs clearance and market entry, but also offers several key benefits:

  • Ensures product quality and safety for consumers
  • Builds trust and credibility in the Indonesian market
  • Enhances the product’s competitive advantage

On the other hand, non-compliance may result in:

  • Products being held or rejected at ports
  • Rejection of BPOM import approval
  • Legal sanctions for distributing uncertified products

Conclusion

Exporters of processed food and beverage products must check whether their products are included in Indonesia’s mandatory SNI list. If so, they should immediately begin the SPPT SNI application process and prepare the necessary documents to avoid import delays or legal issues.
