Knee Support as a Medical Device
A knee support, also known as a knee brace, is a non-implant orthopedic device that supports, stabilizes, and protects the knee joint. It has various applications, including:
- Preventing injuries during sports or physical activity.
- Assisting in rehabilitation after knee surgery.
- Reducing pain and swelling in the knee joint.

In Indonesia, medical device classifications categorize knee support as:
- Category: Physical Health Equipment
- Subcategory: Prosthetic & Orthotic Devices
- Classification: Non-electromedical, Non-sterile
- Risk Class: Class 1A (low risk)
Mandatory Halal Certification in Indonesia
Indonesia’s Law No. 33 of 2014 on Halal Product Assurance, along with Presidential Regulation No. 6 of 2023, now requires all medical devices marketed in the country to comply with halal certification requirements eventually.

This implementation will be rolled out in stages:
Medical Device Class | Mandatory Halal Certification Date |
Class A | October 17, 2026 |
Class B | October 17, 2029 |
Class C | October 17, 2034 |
Class D | October 17, 2039 |
Halal Requirements for Knee Support
According to Minister of Health Regulation No. 3 of 2024, halal certification primarily applies to medical devices that either originate from or contain animal-derived materials.
- If a knee support contains animal-based materials (such as leather, gelatin, or collagen), those raw materials must come from halal sources, and animals must be slaughtered according to Islamic law.
- However, even if the device is made only of synthetic materials (like synthetic rubber, foam, polyester, or plastic), you still need halal certification, though the process is generally simpler.
If a product is non-halal (for example, if it uses pigskin leather or non-halal gelatin), you can still market it. However, you must clearly label the product as “non-halal” or include information about the source materials on the product label.

Therefore, as a Class A Medical Device, Knee support will need to obtain halal certification starting October 17, 2026.

Halal Certification Process
Manufacturers and distributors of knee support must follow several steps to get certified.
- Material Identification: First, ensure that all raw materials, adhesives, and coatings do not contain haram (prohibited) substances.
- Production Audit: Next, you need to verify that your production facilities are free from contamination with non-halal materials.
- Documentation & Halal Assurance System (SJPH): You must create and maintain documentation, including a halal policy, ingredient traceability, and compliance records.
- Submission to BPJPH: The certification process itself is managed by the Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH). A Halal Inspection Body (LPH) conducts the audit, and the final halal ruling comes from MUI.
- Halal Labeling: Finally, once certified, you must place the halal logo on the product packaging.

Impact on Manufacturers & Distributors
Producers and importers of knee support must prepare their halal documentation before the October 17, 2026 deadline. As a result, authorized distributors can only sell knee support products that have either halal certification or a clear “non-halal” label. Given Indonesia’s large Muslim population, halal certification will significantly enhance consumer trust and improve a product’s market competitiveness.
Conclusion
Halal certification will be mandatory for all knee support devices sold in Indonesia starting October 17, 2026. Manufacturers and distributors should begin preparing now, especially if products contain animal-derived materials.
Beyond being a regulatory requirement, halal compliance also represents a valuable market opportunity, helping to strengthen consumer trust and expand access to Indonesia’s healthcare sector.
